Description:
The Blacksburg Historic Lecture Series continues with a historic lecture on site at Walnut Springs in Blacksburg on Thursday, August 15th.
Walnut Springs is the antebellum home of Dr. James Otey. The original property was part of Joseph McDonald's land. McDonald was a neighbor of William Preston and the land was used to produce gunpowder during the Revolutionary War. In the Civil War period, Dr. Otey was a prominent physician who remained in the Blacksburg area during the war, but acted as a liaison between the county and the Confederacy. Carol Hoge and April Danner will be presenting information about the property.
Transcriptions of Dr. James Otey’s diary will be available, and the McDonald cemetery will be open.
Walnut Springs is located at 3587 Glade Road in Blacksburg, Virginia.
The Historic Lecture Series is cosponsored by the Blacksburg Museum and Cultural Foundation and Historic Smithfield Plantation.
