The Glencoe Museum presents the Artist’s Reception for Jennifer P. Carpenter’s works on Thursday, August 29th, from 6:00 to 8:00 pm.

The reception is open to the public. Refreshments will be served. There is no admission charge.

"The Show that Almost Wasn’t," is a quote from artist Jennifer P. Carpenter whose works are now on display at Glencoe Museum. Shortly after leaving her position as a Special Education teacher with Radford City Schools in 2013 to pursue her art full-time Carpenter’s home caught on fire. With the exception of one work, every piece was in the home at the time of the fire. Fortunately, none of the works was destroyed. They have all been restored to their original condition and are now on view in the Gallery at Glencoe.

Jennifer P. Carpenter, who now resides in Christiansburg, is a native of Harrisonburg, Virginia. From an early age, Jennifer’s parents encouraged her to explore her creative talents. She pursued her art training at Bridgewater College, earning a BA in Art in 1987. It was there that she began working with colored pencil after growing tired of the constraints of painting. Following college, she worked in an art shop and continued honing her colored pencil skills. At this time colored pencil was finally earning recognition as a legitimate art medium, and manufacturers were creating better pencils to fit artists’ needs.

Jennifer now surrounds herself with over 700 colored pencils to create her works. She is a charter member of the Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA) and has participated in multiple CPSA International Juried Exhibitions, earning for her Signature Status, which means she may follow her signature with “CPSA” on her works to signify they are created entirely with colored pencil. She has achieved many honors for her art, including most recently the People’s Choice Award from the Jacksonville Center for her work “Bold & Beautiful”—now on display at Glencoe.

The artist especially enjoys creating the illusion of glass and dazzling reflections. Carpenter feels her art’s true theme is that they are depictions of what she likes and what moves her. She develops a relationship with each work, spending anywhere from 20 to 120 hours on any given piece.

In 2001, her life led her away from art on a full-time basis, but with the death of her father in 2012 and his wish for her to “never give it up,” she is returning to her passion. This is Jennifer’s debut show as a once again full-time artist. The show is running from August through September 12, 2013.
