The opening night of The Town of Floyd “A Small Town Summer” Event Series features country musician Ray Scott and popular Franklin County, VA alternative country band Crawford & Powers.

There’s no mistaking the voice of musician Ray Scott. It is a pure country voice through and through. Blessed with a Johnny Cash baritone and the wit of Jerry Reed, the son of a country singer, Ray Scott grew up in Northern Carolina with what folks there call "real" country music.

Listed alongside his influences legendary singer/songwriters such as Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson is Ray Sr., Scott's father. Ray Sr.'s music had a profound effect on his son: "I realize more all the time that listening to his versions and comparing them to the originals I heard on the radio taught me a lot about how to make a song your own," Scott says.

After slugging it out with his own band in North Carolina, Scott headed to Atlanta and obtained an Associate's degree at the Music Business Institute. It wasn't long before the singer made his way to Nashville, the promised land for a young man with traditional country music burning in his soul. Time in the trenches learning the craft of songwriting led to a deal with publisher Tom Collins.

Scott's first taste of music city success came as a songwriter after Randy Travis ("Pray for the Fish") and Clay Walker ("A Few Questions") recorded his songs. It wasn't long before Warner Brothers Nashville came calling. In December 2005, the label released Scott's old-school debut, My Kind of Music. For hardcore country music fans the album was a breath of fresh air. Scott's rumbling baritone and bona fide outlaw style quickly won him a dedicated following.

The first single and title track cracked the top 40, but a combination of label politics and radio’s reluctance to embrace his fresh approach to country traditions had him off the label less than two years later. But a funny thing happened on the way to post-label obscurity – a level of success many major labels might envy.

Crazy Like Me (2008) was put together to have a project to sell on the road, but ended up getting strong critical reaction and surprising sales. Encouraged, Ray connected with producer Dave Brainard (Jerrod Niemann, Brandy Clark) to record Rayality (2011). The single “Those Jeans” received substantial airplay on SiriusXM and went on to sell a couple hundred thousand copies.

Ray Scott is a rare find in country music today. The digital music revolution has turned out to be a “Rayincarnation” for the acclaimed country storyteller. While a label-free utopia where artistic merit trumps popular whims remains as unlikely as it always was, the internet age has allowed a certain kind of creator to connect with an audience and chart a self-determined course.

With roots in country, Americana, and southern rock, Crawford & Power seek to put their twist toward a classic country music revival. Authentically southern, Jake Crawford's powerful vocal blended with a modern approach to the Dobro from Ethan Power, create a brand of country that has been lauded as a breath of fresh air to the genre. The Franklin County, VA based band has already opened for a variety of artists including The Marshall Tucker Band, Willie Nelson, Travis Tritt, The Charlie Daniels Band, Cody Johnson, Luke Combs, 38 Special, Gary Allan, and Jerry Douglas, among many other major acts.

With the help of their debut EP, "Play a Hank Jr. Song," the duo has quickly eclipsed over 2.5 million on-demand streams. Crawford & Power followed up their debut release with two singles in 2019, "She Liked to Get High" and "Dancing Alone" and began 2020 by releasing, "Letting You Go". The duo released "What I've Been Missin'," on August 20th, 2021, which will be the first single off of their new self-titled EP. That was followed by fan favorite "Moonshine", "Country Boys Like Me", and "I'd Like a Shot" in early 2022.
