The Virginia Tech Department of Religion and Culture presents the program "Apple Cultures in Appalachia: Perspectives in Song & Story" on Friday, September 29, 2017 inside the Newman Library Multipurpose Room at Virginia Tech.
Join us to learn how ecological knowledge and community values are embedded in apples, orcharding practices, local celebrations, and traditional Appalachian music. Monacan elder and naturalist Sue Elliott, musician and Appalachian Studies scholar Katie Hoffman, and farmer and Green Market vendor Ron Holdren will share their insights into the place of apple cultures in the southern mountains.
Elliott will discuss day-to-day work, race relations, and harvest gatherings on Monacan orchards in Amherst County, VA, and Hoffman's songs and commentary will offer glimpses into the social, agricultural, and symbolic value of apples in the region. At the close of the panel, "Apple Man" Ron Holdren will introduce an apple tasting, featuring fruit from Ayers' Orchard near Fancy Gap, VA.
This event is free and open to the public.
