Description:
Virginia's Blue Ridge Music Festival presents Washington, D.C. Toho Koto Society in concert on Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Floyd EcoVillage's Celebration Hall.

Enjoy a celebrated ensemble that plays the classical stringed instruments of Japan, the Koto and the Shamisen. A Koto is a foot longer than a piano and ten inches wide, it supports 13 strings in a hollow resonating chamber made of paulownia wood. The 17-string bass Koto was introduced in 1921 and plays two to three octaves lower than the original one.

The founder of the Society, Mrs. Kyoko Okamoto, will be leading the performance and vocal music will also be included.

The Washington Toho Koto Society is a nonprofit group of koto players and friends, primarily in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area, founded in 1971 by Kyoko Okamoto to promote the understanding and appreciation of Japanese koto music. The Washington Toho Koto Society has played for ambassadors, heads of state, and an emperor. For 45 years it has led in the teaching and performance of classical Japanese music in the United States.

The Society participates in many national and local community events, including the Lantern Lighting Ceremony which traditionally opens the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington DC every spring. Since 1973, under the sponsorship of the University of Maryland's Department of Music, the Society has presented an annual spring koto recital.
