Description:
Meadowbrook Public Library presents the program "Why Caving?" on Saturday, September 8, 2018.

The exploration of the unknown has attracted people from the beginning of humanity, and caves are one of the few spots on earth that remain unexplored and understudied. The presentation will highlight the many aspects of cave exploration, with focus on the exploration of the New River Valley and Virginia`s subterranean world. The attendees will learn about safe caving practices, and protection of the cave environment. The role that the scientific study of caves (speleology) has in cave exploration and conservation will also be presented.

Demonstration of technical caving gear used for vertical caving and the main principles of vertical caving will be explained. The speaker will be Katarina Kosic Ficco with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation, Natural Heritage, Karst Program.
