Description:
The Virginia Tech Department of Chemistry and the College of Science presents the public lecture from Richard “Dick” Zare of Stanford University titled "Human Alcoholysis: How Fast Do People Get Drunk?" on Friday, October 5, 2018 at the Lyric Theatre.

Zare will examine the chemistry of drinking to excess and attempt to answer how fast and for how long the consumption of alcohol affects human activity. Know a good beer or wine, but not familiar with kinetics? Zare will cover everything needed to answer the question.

He also will examine a question that has puzzled many fans of James Bond, the fictitious 007 agent created by Ian Fleming. For more than 50 years, Bond has expressed a strong preference to have his martini “shaken, not stirred.” What difference does this make? Zare has the answer.

Note: No alcohol will be served at the lecture.

Zare is the Marguerite Blake Wilbur Professor in Natural Science at Stanford University and is a pioneer in the use of lasers to study chemical reactions at the molecular level, currently pursues diverse theoretical and experimental interests in physical chemistry and nanoscale chemical analysis. His dedication to research and teaching has been recognized by many awards, including the National Medal of Science, the Wolf Prize in Chemistry, and the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring.

The lecture is free and open to the public.
