Description:
The Floyd Center for the Arts presents an Author Talk with Beth Macy and her new book "Dopesick" on Sunday, November 25, 2018.

Beth Macy will speak about her new book, "Dopesick: Dealers, Doctors and the Drug Company that Addicted America", an exploration into the opioid crisis in America and in particular Virginia. Her talk will be followed by a book signing and reception.

“Dopesick,” officially released August 7, 2018 and greeted with rave reviews, is already listed at no. 5 on The New York Times compilation of best-selling non-fiction books. With its deep reporting on the opioid crisis causing deaths and ruining families of every background in Appalachia and in urban areas, Beth Macy has become a national figure.

Beth Macy is a New York Times-bestselling author of two books, "Factory Man" and "Truevine". Macy’s work as a newspaper reporter, mostly at The Roanoke Times, featured outsiders and underdogs and won more than a dozen awards. Her books reflect a deep respect for the stories of marginalized people and communities, dogged persistence in her research, and a gift for telling complicated stories in a compelling way.

Her work has also been featured in Oprah magazine, PARADE, American Journalism Review, Salon, the Christian Science Monitor and "The Best Newspaper Writing" anthology.

Her forthcoming book, "Dopesick", is a look at the opioid epidemic as it unfolded in three Virginia communities; it will be published in August.

Admission is free however seating is limited.

Doors will be open at 2:00 pm for the 3:00 pm talk. Arrive early to secure your seat as a capacity crowd is expected.

This will be the Roanoke-based author’s third visit to the Center. Her first was four years ago when her book – the best-selling "Factory Man” – had a special resonance in the area. The title character was John Bassett III, who fought to save his furniture manufacturing business – and its employees from the “off-shoring” that was wrecking the U.S. furniture industry. Bassett and Macy appeared together that afternoon and delighted a standing room-only crowd with comments about the book and each other.

Note: The event was originally scheduled for September 16, 2018, but had to be postponed due to weather.
