Description:
The Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech presents their 2019 Moss Pit with music from Eight Point Star and Lobo Marino with opener Peat Bogs on Thursday, November 21, 2019.

The "Moss Pit" returns as regional legends Eight Point Star and Richmond's Lobo Marino take over the Cube! Prepare to open your mind and explore ambient electronic sounds inspired by nature, Appalachian fiddle traditions with stories all their own and experimental folk songs born from continuous travels and spiritual journeys.

Performing with Lobo Marino will be local dancer and performance artist Katie Wells.

Eight Point Star is a New River Valley-Roanoke collective gathered around old-time and improvisational fiddler Mike Gangloff and bluesy fingerstyle guitarist Matt Peyton that draws on traditional and international roots to create a sound all their own.

With hardanger fiddle, hurdy-gurdy, banjos, gongs, singing bowls and lots more, this is a mostly acoustic sound, but with Matt's theremin and other electronics occasionally rising to the surface sometimes from the Golden Age jazz or Great American Songbook classics that Cara grew up singing, sometimes from the urgent, raw blues that Matt has pursued and sometimes from pure, free improvisation aimed at creating an in-the-moment symphony. This is extended Appalachian music with a story of its own to tell.

Solid, bluesy fingerstyle guitar and soaring, scratchy hardanger fiddle combine for duo explorations; a search for beauty.

Named after the enormous Pacific Sea Lion, Lobo Marino's brand of experimental folk draws from a rich palette of international and folk influences. Built primarily on harmonium, bass drum, banjo and various unique instruments and voices, Lobo Marino continues to evolve as the musical response to the continuous travels and ongoing spiritual journey of its members, Laney Sullivan and Jameson Price.

They are also the founders of Earth Folk Collective and Fonticello Food Forest in Richmond, VA. Deeply dedicated to environmental and social causes, when traveling they carry in their music a message of humanity's need for re-connection with the earth. While at home, they spend time community organizing and running their donation based educational homestead Earth Folk Collective.
