The Virginia Tech Department of Biological Sciences presents their 10th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr Webinar with Dr. Bryan Dewsbury on Zoom and YouTube on Friday, January 22, 2021.

Martin Luther King said that "the function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character – that is the goal of true education". In this address we will explore the full meaning of this holistic view of the education process, and the ways in which if internalized, it grants us opportunities to shape our own futures.

Dr. Bryan Dewsbury was born and raised in Trinidad and Tobago before earning his BSc in Biology from Morehouse College and MSc and PhD in Biology from Florida International University. He is PI of the SEAS (Science Education And Society) Research program in Biology at the University of Rhode Island (URI) and focuses on questions relating to identity constructs, bias, relationships, and the effects of those variables on learning in students (K-PhD). His research demonstrates that the often high proportion of D, F and W grades in introductory science and math classes can be reduced by a variety of interventions thereby improving student retention in STEM fields.

Dr. Dewsbury is a Fellow of the John N. Gardner Institute, an Advisory Board Member of the Quantifying Undergraduate Biology Education and Synthesis (QUBES) and a PI of the MARC U*STAR training program for underrepresented undergraduates at URI. As a Gardner Fellow he assists member institutions nationally with course design and institutional inclusivity practices. Through QUBES he works with faculty mentoring networks and quantitative biology data modules.
