Description:
The Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech concludes their HomeStage Series with Ephrat Asherie Dance performing "Odeon" on Thursday, April 29, 2021.

Ephrat “Bounce” Asherie returns to the Moss HomeStage lineup following her hyper-energetic behind-the-scenes fall workshop with performers from Ephrat Asherie Dance (EAD). Odeon, the company’s newest work, brings together street and club dances—including breaking, hip-hop, house, and vogue—remixes them, picks them apart, and challenges them to inhabit unfamiliar spatial and choreographic contexts. Created by Ephrat and her brother, Ehud Asherie, this hybrid approach to movement is accompanied onstage by a jazz quartet playing the music of Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth, known for mixing early 20th century romantic music with samba and other popular Afro-Brazilian rhythms.

The Moss presents this performance of Odeon streamed from the Joyce Theater in New York City, followed by a live discussion with Ephrat and Ehud. A New York City-based b-girl, dancer, choreographer, and a Bessie Award winner, Ephrat has shown off her formidable street dance chops as a favorite member of Dorrance Dance. Ehud, called “a master of swing and stride" by the New Yorker, is a jazz pianist who integrates the venerable New York piano tradition into his inventive style.

“The talented break dancer Ephrat Asherie is known in the dance world as Bounce...for her uncalculated, effervescent dancing.”
— The New York Times

A 2016 Bessie Award Winner for Innovative Achievement in Dance, Asherie most recently received a National Dance Project award to support the development and touring of Odeon. Her dance company, Ephrat Asherie Dance, is rooted in street and social dance and dedicated to revealing the inherent complexities of these forms. The company explores the expansive narrative qualities of various street and club styles, including breaking, hip-hop, and house, as a means to tell stories, develop innovative imagery, and find new modes of expression.
