Description: Rising Silo Farm Brewery presents Ragtime Fred in concert on Thursday, October 14, 2021.

Ragtime Fred is a duo from Blacksburg, Virginia that play ragtime and classic jazz songs from about 1890 through 1945. We use everybody’s favorite combination of 5 string and tenor banjo, vocals and acoustic bass, put a slightly different spin on these old familiar tunes. We have played in bands together for many years and have a true link that is obvious when you watch us play. We were previously called Frederick’s Tiny Methodist Hymnal, but that name was apparently too long to remember, so we shortened it to Ragtime Fred! Still though, neither of us is named Fred.

Beth Kelsey on bass has had many years of piano training and approaches the bass with a nod to that training, but also with a nod to her more recent musical inspirations- Scott Mulvahill, Joel Landsberg, Victor Wooten, and Bootsy Collins. She plays tastefully and interestingly and is an integral part of the sound.

Bud Bennett plays both 5 string and tenor banjo as well as performing the vocals in the band. His musical influences are many and varied ranging from Bela Fleck, Butch Robins, Courtney Johnson, Eddy Davis, Don Vappie and many others. His main musical interest is music from the ragtime and early jazz eras and he performs these numbers with a slight modern twist.
