The Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech presents "Rise Up": Music and Human Rights with Angelique Kidjo on Wednesday, January 19, 2022. Renowned musician and activist Angélique Kidjo speaks to the role and power of the arts in the global struggle to secure human rights for all. A pan-African music superstar, Kidjo has committed her life to advocacy, earning a UNICEF ambassadorship and founding Batonga, an association providing young African women with secondary and higher education. Celebrate Virginia Tech’s annual commemoration of the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. with one of today’s most inspiring voices for social change. Angélique Kidjo is one of the greatest artists in international music today, a creative force with thirteen albums to her name. Kidjo’s stage presence and fluency in multiple cultures and languages have won respect from her peers and expanded her following across national borders. She is the recipient of the prestigious 2015 Crystal Award given by the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland and the 2016 Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience Award. The BBC has included Kidjo in its list of Africa’s “50 most iconic figures,” and in 2011 The Guardian listed her as one of their “Top 100 Most Inspiring Women in the World.” Forbes Magazine ranked her as the first woman in their list of the "Most Powerful Celebrities in Africa". Angelique has performed with several international orchestras and symphonies including the Bruckner Orchestra, The Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and the Philharmonie de Paris. Her rousing live show was captured at the revered Austin City Limits and made its television debut in January 2016.
