Description: The Wilderness Road Regional Museum presents their 160th Speaker Series of the May 1864 Events featuring The Battle of Cloyd's Mountain and the New River Bridge with a six part speaker series starting on Monday, April 29, 2024.

Join us for a Speaker Series to mark the 160th Anniversary of the May 1864 events in the New River Valley to learn more about those impactful moments when the Civil War came to Southwest Virginia.

The series will involve six separate learning opportunities with two field trips to the actual battle sites, three lectures and one viewing of the Cloyd's Mountain Documentary filmed during the Sesquicentennial.

The series schedule is as follows and occurs on dates similar to the actual events 160 years ago:

• Monday April 29th, 6:00 PM:
Overview presentation on War in Southwest Virginia presented by Education Director April Martin.
Location: Do-Better Cottage at the Wilderness Road Regional Museum.

• Friday May 3rd, 6:00 PM:
Wharton Letters context history of war in SWVA presented by Executive Director Scott Gardner of Glencoe Mansion: Museum & Gallery.
Location: Do-Better Cottage at the Wilderness Road Regional Museum.

• Sunday May 5th, 6:00 PM:
Showing of the Battle of Cloyd's Mountain Documentary produced during the Sesquicentennial.
Location: Do-Better Cottage at Wilderness Road Regional Museum

• Thursday May 9th, 6:00 PM:
Battlefield site visit with guide and history room visit at Stout house.

• Friday May 10th, 6:00 PM:
Visit to Fort Hill, Battle of New River Bridge and ruins of Ingles Ferry Footbridge.

• Saturday May 11th, 6:00 PM:
Experience of African-Americans during and after May 1864 Raid by Dr. Dan Thorp, Dept. of History at Virginia Tech.
