Description:
The Virginia Center for Civil War Studies at Virginia Tech presents the online lecture "The Birth of a Genre: 100 Years of Slavery on the Silver Screen" on Monday, February 8, 2021.
Enjoy a free lecture and discussion with Dr. Matthew Christopher Hulbert, part of the “New Perspectives on the Civil War Era” speaker series. This “crash course” on Hollywood’s rendering of slavery explores the good, the bad, the well-intentioned (but still bad), and the truly-abhorrent from "Birth of a Nation" (1915) to recent treatments such as "Django Unchained" (2012) and "12 Years a Slave" (2013).
