Description:
Radford University Department of History continues their World War II, 75 Years Since the Victory: Powder, People and Politics: The Radford Ordnance Works and the New River Valley" on Wednesday, March 31, 2021 on Zoom and in Room 271 (iLab in CITL) inside the McConnell Library on the campus of Radford University.
The talk will be presented by Highlander Scholar Adam Bennett. Bennett examines the impact that World War II had on the city of Radford, and the surrounding counties of the New River Valley. On August 22, 1940, when surveying began for an Army ammunition plant, the Radford area changed dramatically. This led to a change in the environment, the population, and the economy of this Appalachian community. Numerous primary sources gathered from the archives of local libraries, including Radford University and Virginia Tech, provide an in-depth examination of how a world war can impact a small, mountain city.
There is limited in-person seating for this event in McConnell Library Rm 271 (iLab in CITL) and a streaming option via Zoom is also available. In-person attendance remains available only to individuals with an affiliation with Radford University.

The talks will feature a dialogue between speaker and audience, a major goal of the series.
This event is part of Radford University's World War II 75th Anniversary Series: Experience and Legacy. To commemorate the lives of those who fought for freedom in World War II, Radford University is hosting a semester-long series of events dedicated to remembering the heroes’ significant impact on society. The series was put on hold during the spring, but resumed for the fall term.
“We want attendees to understand the dimensions of the war in different ways,” said Matthew Oyos, Ph.D., professor of history. “We want attendees to consider the perspective of that generation. What will the world be like without people who don't know that awful conflict as a living memory? It's a cautionary tale that we can all learn from today.”
Admission is free and open to the public.
The “World War II 75 Years Since the Victory Series: Experience and Legacy” series of events is a cross-discipline collaboration, showcasing the vast impact of World War II and sponsored by the Radford University College of Humanities and Behavioral Sciences, Department of History, McConnell Library and the Office of the Provost.
