Description:
The Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech presents a virtual conversation titled "In the Moment: Artists and Their Work with Martha Olson" online on Zoom on Friday, June 25, 2021.
Join us for a virtual conversation with Blacksburg-based artist Martha Olson as she shares the creative inspirations and techniques that bring her mixed-media vessels to life. Olson is currently featured in the Moss Arts Center's summer exhibition, "Roots, Reeds, and Vines: The Art of Basketry", open now through August 28th.
Created with what resembles traditional rag-rug construction, Martha Olson’s vessels are woven of humble materials that “many would not consider worth using or reusing,” she comments. Olson uses paper grocery bags, old rag rugs, scrap fabric, found rocks, and beads—materials that, she says, “flow in and out of women's lives, some having little importance and [which are] taken for granted, while other materials hold stories of shared generations.”
Olson describes her studio practice as euphoric, expansive, and challenging. “It is like a dance that swirls in and out, combining images with color and movement to form my creations,” she says. The vessels created from the debris of her life and the swirl of creativity hold space that is open to interpretation.
Admission is free though registration is required.
