Science on Tap - New River Valley presents The Poetry of Science Communication on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at Rising Silo Farm Brewery.
Hear Kristin Rose Jutras talk about science communication as we explore science haikus and generate a community poem!
Kristin Rose Jutras is the Communication and Creative Services Director at the Fralin Life Sciences Institute at Virginia Tech and is responsible for developing strategic communications and marketing plans, press releases, videos, and magazines.
Kristin will talk about the intersection of poetry and science writing, as she believes there is much poets can learn from science communicators and vice versa. Each art involves choosing the right word. Kristin will look at poems including those by Elizabeth Bishop, Sylvia Plath, and Yusef Komunyakaa to illustrate how language can telescope and be exacting. There will be a chance to explore some science haikus and a free-write to craft our own science community poem.
Admission is free.
Extra credit: Please bring your favorite scientific peer reviewed article with language you admire. This can be from your own research group.
Science on Tap - New River Valley is a monthly event with science-inspired speakers, performers, and discussions. We support bringing science to our community and our community’s support to local research.
We kick off the event with games, comedy, or other fun things. Then, an invited guest researcher demos their research. And then we'll discuss, ask questions, learn together and mingle.
