Historic Smithfield presents "A Day of Honor: Sergeant Thomas Fraction" on Saturday, November 6, 2021.
Event Schedule:
• 10:30 AM: Plaque Dedication Ceremony
• 1:30 PM: Panel Discussion: "Lies: the African American Soldier in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War"
A commemorative ceremony will honor Sergeant Thomas Fraction, a Civil War soldier who fought with the 40th United States Colored Infantry after escaping from slavery in Blacksburg, Virginia.
This ceremony will be followed by a moderated panel discussion titled "Truth and Lies: the African American Soldier in the United States Colored Troops during the Civil War" featuring Dr. Kerri Moseley-Hobbs from the More than a Fraction Foundation and Kevin Levin & Caroline Newhall from the Virginia Center for Civil War Studies.
Admission is free and all are welcome.
Tour admission to the house is also free for all on that day!
