Description:
The Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets presents NASCAR Driver Jesse Iwuji speaking on Thursday, November 18, 2021 inside Burruss Auditorium on the campus of Virginia Tech.
NASCAR driver Jesse Iwuji will bring a positive message about access, resilience, and perseverance when he speaks as part of the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets’ Cutchins Leadership Lecture Series.
One of two Black drivers regularly competing in NASCAR’s national series, Iwuji earned a full scholarship to the U.S. Naval Academy, where he played football and ran track and field.
He commissioned as a surface warfare officer in the U.S. Navy and deployed twice to the Arabian Gulf. He now serves in the Navy Reserves and champions companies and charities that give back to the men and women in uniform.
This summer, Iwuji announced a partnership with NFL Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith to form a new full-time Xfinity team in 2022 known as Jesse Iwuji Motorsports. He has said his goal is to bring more diversity to NASCAR and being an owner is the most direct way to do that.
Iwuji’s talk to the Corps of Cadets is free and open to the public. Seating is available behind the cadets, who have assigned seats in the front half of the auditorium.
Everyone is looking for great leaders. Our mission in the Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets is to help nurture and create them. This is why our numbers have grown and the reason why exceptional men and women are drawn to be in the Corps in increasing numbers.
A significant part of the university since its establishment in 1872, we have evolved into a world-class leader development program, which still understands that at the root of great leaders is great character. This involves more than just classroom work. This is a four-year commitment to strive 24 hours per day, seven days a week to immerse oneself in a residential community focusing on the development of practical, ethical, and leadership skills.
Our cadets wear uniforms – not just because of tradition – but because they are making a statement that they have committed to a course of study, a set of high standards, and a way of life to which not all choose to aspire.
