Description:
The Virginia Center for Civil War Studies at Virginia Tech presents a free online lecture and discussion titled "Rites of Retaliation: Civilization, Soldiers, and Campaigns in the American Civil War" on Zoom on Tuesday, March 15, 2022.
Dr. Lorien Foote will lead this free online lecture and discussion about her new book. Union and Confederate military commanders used a ritual of retaliation in nearly every campaign of the American Civil War. This talk will use examples from the Department of the South to explain how the ritual allowed combatants to debate the rules of civilized warfare.
Retaliation in the Department of the South forced the Confederate War Department to change its policies and changed the behavior of armies in the field during campaigns in the region.
