Description:
Virginia Tech College of Science and Virginia Tech Alumni Association presents the program "Hokies for Good: Modernizing Miss America" online on Tuesday, March 8, 2022.
In honor of International Women's Day, join us for a virtual conversation with Miss America 1979 Kylene Barker McNeill and Miss America 2020 Camille Schrier, both Hokies. The talk will focus on their impact on modernizing the Miss America pageant.
Kylene Barker McNeill, a Galax native, earned a degree in clothing and textiles from Virginia Tech in 1978. After securing the titles of Miss Pulaski County and Miss Virginia, she went on to be crowned Miss America in 1979. She has since run a successful clothing boutique in Florida and become a published author. She continues to stay involved with speaking engagements and has served on the Virginia Tech Alumni Association board of directors.
About Camille Schrier, originally from Pennsylvania, double majored in biochemistry and systems biology with a minor in chemistry. She won Miss Virginia in 2019 and took home her Miss America title in 2020, where she completed a chemistry demonstration as her talent. Schrier uses her platform to advocate for her social impact initiative, Mind Your Meds: Drug Safety and Abuse Prevention from Pediatrics to Geriatrics, with a strong focus on combating the opioid epidemic. She is currently working toward her doctor of pharmacy degree at VCU.
Registration is free, but participants can make an optional gift to support student scholarships at Virginia Tech and the College of Science.
