Description:
The American Indian and Indigenous Community Center along with Native at Virginia Tech presents their 5th Annual Spring Pow Wow on Saturday, April 23, 2022 on the Graduate Life Center Lawn.
Schedule:
• 12:00 PM: Grand Entry
• ~2:15 PM: Intermission
Traditionally, powwows have always invoked a sense of community among Native American peoples. In addition to the continued development of campus community, the event aims to engage Native and Indigenous students on campus, promote cultural education, foster lasting relationships with Virginia tribes, and recruit prospective students. The day includes a showcase of Native dance traditions as well and drumming and singing. We will also welcome several Native vendors.
This year, for the first time, t-shirts will be available to attendees for free while supplies last. The t-shirts were designed by Native artist Sadie Red Wing.
The MC will be Amelia Kay Oxendine and the AD Joey Crutchfield. The Head Lady will be Alicia Aldaz and the Head Man will be Slavador Aldaz. The Southern Drum will be performed by Zotigh and the Northern Drum by Soap Stone.
A Native American powwow is a ceremonial time of renewal and a way for Indigenous people to honor a spiritual connection to their ancestors. It is a gathering to socialize, dance, pray, and celebrate, but where each tribe or individual ascribes personalized meaning.
We are so excited to welcome tribal communities from the region to participate.
We are so grateful to our co-sponsors which include: Moss Arts Center, Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, Dept. of History, Religion and Culture, Fish and Wildlife, the Office for Inclusion and Diversity, Student Budget Board, American Indian Studies, University Libraries, Dept. of Sociology, The Graduate School, Pamplin College of Business, College of Science, School of Education and the Dept. of Geosciences.
The event is free and open to the public.
Native at Virginia Tech is dedicated to advancing the visibility of American Indians and other Indigenous peoples on campus, as well as raising an awareness of the issues that confront these diverse populations.
In the event of inclement weather, the event will be held inside the Graduate Life Center Multipurpose Room on the campus of Virginia Tech.
The Graduate Life Center Lawn is located at 290 College Avenue in Blacksburg, VA on the campus of Virginia Tech.
