Description:
The 2022 Summer Arts Festival continues their Thursday Night Indoor Concerts with Victorian Madness at the Blacksburg Presbyterian Church on Thursday, July 14, 2022.

Join Virginia Tech faculty tenor Brian Thorsett and pianist Richard Masters as they explore the music of Arthur Somervell and Maude Valérie White.

Somervell’s massive song cycle Maud is based on the epic poem by Victorian poet-laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson, best-known as the author of the poem The Charge of the Light Brigade. Maud tells the tale of an unbalanced young man who falls in love with Maud, the lovely daughter of a neighbor, eventually spiraling into madness and despair. The songs by Maude White are likely Virginia premieres, possibly even U.S. premieres; based on Tennyson’s In memoriam, they capture the essence of Victorian society, with deep passions lurking behind seemingly proper exteriors.

Rounding out the evening is a set of songs by pianist and conductor Landon Ronald, whose ripe Edwardian song cycle Summertime will delight you.

Admission is free and open to the public.

The Summer Arts Festival is presented through the joint efforts of Virginia Tech's School of Performing Arts and the Town of Blacksburg. The Summer Arts Festival includes Friday night concerts on Henderson Lawn, classic films in the historic Lyric Theatre, an art exhibit in the Perspective Gallery in the Squires Student Center, and numerous special events such as Summer Solstice Fest, the Fourth of July celebration, and Steppin' Out street festival. New this year will be a series of Thursday night concerts at the Presbyterian Church including a performance of Mozart's Requiem, a production of "Our Town" by Thornton Wilder in Theatre 101 featuring actors from Virginia Tech and the community, and children's activities in the new campus Living Learning Community building.

All events of the Summer Arts Festival are free and open to the public.
