The Museum of Geosciences at Virginia Tech presents its annual Fossil Unpacking Party after a two-year hiatus caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on Tuesday, August 30, 2022.

Hosted by Dr. Michelle Stocker, an assistant professor, and Dr. Sterling Nesbitt, an associate professor, both in the Department of Geosciences, the event will feature the unpacking of fossils discovered this past summer in digs in Arizona and Texas. This summer’s fieldwork, completed in May and June, involved found fossils from the Late Triassic age, roughly 228 million to 210 million years old. This is a great opportunity to participate in an active scientific research project!

The evening will begin with a brief presentation by Stocker, Nesbitt, and geosciences students at a location yet to be announced. Then participants will head over to unwrap fossils in the Museum.

This free Museum program is open to the public and is appropriate for VT students, K-12 teachers, community members and families bringing kids over age 7.

Children older than 7 are welcome to attend the unpacking if accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is appreciated. Please email mogs@vt.edu with name, email contact, number of people and ages of children.

No free parking is available at the Museum, as all parking on campus requires a parking fee. The Museum suggests visitors park at the Perry Street Parking Garage. Visitors can purchase daily parking passes for $6.00 through the ParkMobile app, online at https://virginiatech.t2hosted.com/Account/Portal or in person at VT parking services.
