The Virginia Center for Civil War Studies presents the program "The Whartons’ War: Civil War Correspondence of General Gabriel C. Wharton & Anne Radford Wharton" on Thursday, October 20, 2022 in the outdoor pavilion at Historic Smithfield.
Hear from the co-editor of the remarkable wartime correspondence between the Whartons, future residents of Glencoe Mansion in Radford, Virginia. Between 1863 and 1865 the couple wrote hundreds of letters, recently rediscovered, which provide fascinating perspectives on military and political issues, changing gender roles, the Confederacy’s crisis of loyalty, slavery, and much more.
The event is free and all are welcome.
