Description:
Wilderness Road Regional Museum presents the History Talk titlted "The Melungeon People: Diversity Comes Home" on Thursday, November 10, 2022.
The Melungeons are a group of mixed ethnic ancestry first documented in northeastern Tennessee and southwestern Virginia in the early 19th century. As a group, the Melungeons were considered by outsiders to have a mixture of European, Native American and African ancestry. Researchers have referred to the Melungeons and similar groups as "tri-racial isolates", and the Melungeons have faced discrimination, both legal and social, because they did not fit into America’s accepted racial categories. More recent research indicates the Melungeon story is a much more complicated story of a mixed ethnicity people.
Dr. Terry W. Mullins will discuss the origins and unique story of the Melungeon People in his presentation.
Admission is free and all are welcome.
Wilderness Road Regional Museum is located at 5420 Wilderness Road in Newbern, VA.
