Wilderness Road Regional Museum presents their annual Appalachian Old Christmas Celebration on Sunday, January 8, 2023.
Please plan to join us for this fun and educational celebration! Enjoy music by Mary Greene, storytelling, burning of the Christmas greens, musket salute to announce the birth of Christ, bean cake to determine this year's King or Queen of Mischief, traditional stack cakes and other seasonal sweets along with our Custom Great Road Tea.
The Fincastle Company living history group will present our Musket Salute to announce the birth of Christ. They will also share 18th century history both civilian and military including herbal medicines and period toys and games.
As all good Appalachians know, two Christmas celebrations are better than one. So we celebrate the original Christmas date from the Julian Calendar (Old Christmas) and the new date (December 25th) from the Gregorian Calendar which knocked off 11 full days. It took a long time to convince people to switch dates and then a longer time for that news to spread. The official acceptance occurred in 1752 for most of Great Britain and her colonies, but early settlers in the Appalachians did not know, care, or want to change.
Admission is free for the event, but donations accepted and appreciated.
