Description:
The Virginia Tech Center for Communicating Science presents Virginia Tech Faculty Nutshell Talks on Thursday, September 7, 2023 at The Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech.
What could possibly be more fun than the Center for Communicating Science’s annual graduate student presentation competition, the Nutshell Games? Come and find out! Please join us for the first-ever Faculty Nutshell Talks! No need to get tickets, the Moss Center has a capacity of 300!
This pilot Faculty Nutshell Talks event will feature more than a dozen courageous and groundbreaking faculty speakers. Challenged to explain their research in a mere 90 seconds, the faculty members will present to a public audience and a panel of judges.
The fun and fast-paced presentation competition will allow the audience to learn about a wide variety of research projects and the participants to compete for prizes of professional development funding. While five winners will be announced at the conclusion of the event, a sixth winner will be selected based on the highest number of views of the video recordings of the talks.
This first rendition of what we hope will become an annual event will feature speakers representing six of Virginia Tech’s colleges, University Libraries, and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute.
The event’s distinguished panel of judges includes Brady Alexander, Blacksburg 7th grader; Cyril Clarke, Virginia Tech provost; Brett Malone, president of the Corporate Research Center; Melissa Nelson, VT Board of Visitors member; Daniel Smith, Presidential Postdoctoral Fellow; and Tracy Vosburgh, vice president of Communications and Marketing.
What a great way to learn more about the work that is happening at Virginia Tech, support some faculty who are stepping out of their comfort zones, and have a lot of fun! And all in less than an hour. Don’t miss it!
Admission is free and open to the public.
Presented by Virginia Tech’s Center for Communicating Science, the event is supported by the Office of Research and Innovation and by Faculty Affairs.
The Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech is located at 330 Turner Street NW in Blacksburg, VA.
