Description:
The Floyd Center for the Arts presents the Opening Reception for the 17th New River Art Biennial Exhibit which will be installed in the Center's Hayloft Gallery starting on Saturday, October 14, 2023.

Floyd Center for the Arts welcomes the community to the exhibition. This exhibit rotates every two years between this Floyd Center for the Arts, the Fine Arts Center for the New River Valley (FACNRV) in Pulaski and the Blacksburg Regional Art Association. This is a Juried Exhibition, and artwork will be selected by Juror Chris Pollins to be granted cash prizes. Exhibit dates are from October 14 until November 29, 2023.

Simultaneously, our Falcon Gallery will host a captivating solo exhibit by emerging artist Layla Dobos, titled "Chaos and Catharsis" which will be on display from October 14th - November 30th.

ABOUT THE JUROR:
Chris Pollins is the Founding Executive Director for the Chestnut Creek School of the Arts in Galax, Virginia. Before founding Chestnut Creek, Chris was fundamental in founding the Programming Department at the Floyd Center for the Arts as the Founding Director of Educational Programming, where she established three fully functional studios, and year-round programming.

Chris has instructed art at various schools, including Touchstone Center for Crafts, VCU, and Corcoran School of Art. She has exhibited her sculpture work in multiple institutions and was recently the Artist in Residence at Touchstone Center for Crafts. Chris earned a Bachelors of Fine Art in Sculpture from Virginia Commonwealth University.

"I believe everyone has an inherent ability to create and it is through classes that individuals can explore the tools and techniques necessary to develop a skill and realize unknown talents through practice and perseverance. The gratification of this experience is limitless. As a sculptor, I experience the thrill of creation firsthand. As a teacher, I relish in my students’ exploration, experimentation and experience of creative learning. As an administrator, I am able to provide this experience. Art is a right not a privilege and brings a quality to life that I think nothing else can provide."

Admission is free and all are welcome.
