University Libraries at Virginia Tech presents the Exhibit Reception for "Shining a Light on the Christiansburg Institute" on Thursday, September 28, 2023 in the 2nd Floor Driffield Commons within the Newman Library on the campus of Virginia Tech.

Join us in a reception for the Fall 2023 Exhibit "Shining a Light on the Christiansburg Institute: A Collaborative Digitization Effort". This exhibit celebrates the history of the Christiansburg Institute and their recent partnership with Virginia Tech University Libraries to digitize their museum and archive. Christiansburg Institute alumni, descendants, and supporters will be attending to view the exhibit. This is a great opportunity to connect with engaged community members to discuss our region’s Black cultural heritage.

The unheard stories gleaned from 870 photographs, 60 slides, 15 diplomas, 48,000 typed pages, and 3,300 handwritten pages from the school's principals, teachers, and students are invaluable in spotlighting the Black Appalachian experience throughout the ages and are now available to anyone with an internet connection.

This event encourages exploration of the exhibit, engagement with the Christiansburg Institute community, and provides resources for more information on the project and on the Christiansburg Institute Digital Archive.

Opening remarks from Christopher Sanchez, Director of the Christiansburg Institute, Inc. and Debbie Sherman-Lee, CI alumna and Chairperson of Christiansburg Institute, Inc.’s Board of Directors will begin at 4:30 PM.

The reception will be catered by Delaney’s Kitchen, owned and operated by a Christiansburg Institute descendent. Other beverages and light catering will also be provided.

Admission is free though registration is required.

The exhibit features a selection of historical materials in an interactive and informative display open to the public until December 17th.

The Newman Library is located at 560 Drillfield Drive in Blacksburg, VA on the campus of Virginia Tech.
