Description:
The Wilderness Road Regional Museum presents a history presentation titled "Remembering the Battle for the New River Bridge: The Day the Civil War Came to Radford" on Thursday, October 19, 2023.
Please join us for a special presentation titled "Remembering the Battle for the New River Bridge: The Day the Civil War Came to Radford". Dr. David Anderson of Radford University will share findings from this summer's archaeological field study from the earthen fortifications at Fort Hill.
Cannon emplacements were built to protect the Virginia and Tennessee Railroad Bridge on the bluffs above the New River by Confederate forces early in the American Civil War. In May of 1864, following the Battle of Cloyd's Mountain, the area known as Fort Hill would soon be surrounded by Federal troops as the cannon battle of the New River Bridge took place. Join us as hear about what was found during the investigation.
The talk is free to attend, but donations are always appreciated.
The museum owns the property where Fort Hill is located and hopes to share more opportunities for education outreach at the site in the near future. We are very thankful to Radford University for their assistance with this research.
The Wilderness Road Regional Museum is located at 5420 Wilderness Road in Newbern, VA.
