Description:
The Blacksburg Museum and Cultural Foundation presents the 9th Annual New Town Festival: Blues, Brews and BBQ on Saturday, October 28, 2023 at St. Luke and Odd Fellows Hall.
Join us as we celebrate the historic, New Town, neighborhood and St Luke & Odd Fellows Hall!
St. Luke & Odd Fellows Hall, a nationally recognized historic landmark, once served as the social center of New Town, a neighborhood for African-American residents during segregation. It now houses a museum of African-American history and culture, and serves as an important reminder of the resilience, pride, self-reliance, and community spirit of the people who lived in New Town, as well as the legacy of injustice that segregation imposed. The Blues, Brews, and BBQ event recalls some of the happier times in New Town, when friends and neighbors would gather for singing, dancing, community, and fellowship.
Enjoy live music from Lady D and Mi$$ion, The JoJo Stockton Project and Isaac Hadden.
Doris A. Fields, also known as Lady D, is an R&B and soul singer, songwriter, actress, director and playwright based in Beckley, West Virginia and is known as West Virginia's "First Lady of Soul". She performs as both a duo and with her band Mi$$ion.
Among her accomplishments are her five CDs, "Nobody's Bizness," "My Turn", "Reflections" and "Go Higher". "Nobody's Bizness" was released in 2003. It is the musical soundtrack from her one-woman stage play, "The Lady and the Empress," which she wrote and performs. The play is based on the life and music of blues legend, Bessie Smith and features 10 songs originally recorded by Smith in the 20s and 30s.
In 2008, Lady D’s original song, “Go Higher” was chosen as the best Obama Inaugural Song and earned her a trip with her band, MI$$ION to Washington, DC to perform at the Obama for Change Inaugural Ball in 2009. In 2010, Lady D was honored to perform at the live recording of the HistoryMakers: “An Evening With Henry Louis Gates, Jr.” at the Cultural Center in Charleston. In August 2014, Lady D was inducted into the “All Black Schools Sports & Academic Hall of Fame” (ABSSA) with a Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2017 Lady D was again honored to win the DC Blues Society Blues Challenge as a member of “Lady D with the Rogue Johnsen Trio".
She is a West Virginia native and graduate of West Virginia State University with a bachelor's degree in Communications.
