Description:
Claytor Lake State Park presents First Day Hikes 2024 on Monday, January 1, 2024.
Celebrate the New Year outside with a step in the right direction with an adventure-filled day planned. This is a free statewide parking day for all Virginia State Parks. Free First Day Hike bumper stickers will be available at the Contact Station and at the Gift Shop from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM while supplies last.
Schedule of Events:
• 7:30 AM: First Light Hike:
Join us at Shelter #1 by a warm fire as we wait for the first light of the New Year to rise over Claytor Lake. Once we enjoy the reflections of the sunrise, we'll take a short stroll along the lake as we soak in the sun and stride into the New Year.
• 10:00 AM: Early Bird Hike:
Join Master Naturalists on a short hike in search of different bird species. Meet at the Howe House.
• 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM: Trick Your Stick:
Create your own uniquely designed walking stick. Find you own stick or choose one from our collection. We'll have crafting supplies available to use inside the Water's Edge Meeting Facility.
• 12:00 PM: Search for Sasquatch: Join a park ranger on a trek in search of tracks. Many critters call Claytor Lake State Park home, so you never know what traces you might encounter. Meet at the overflow parking lot across from the Meeting Facility at the Poplar Leaf Trailhead.
• 6:00-9:00 PM: Gazebo Holiday Lights:
Take a walk down to the Gazebo behind the Howe House or park at the Marina parking lot and enjoy from across the cove. The lights are donated by the Claytor Lake State Park Ambassadors.
Or create your own experience during the event on one of our many trails or simply hike along the waterfront to stretch your eyes or reset your mind. Self-guided activity brochures will be available.
