The Christiansburg Library presents Sadie's Diaries: a Local History Program on Saturday, January 13, 2024.
Join local historian and transcriber, Kathy Calvert, as she introduces us to Sarah Eliza VanPelt Summers through her own words. "Sadie's Diaries" is an autobiographical collection recorded her daily life in Snowville, Christiansburg, and other parts of the New River Valley in the late 1800s and early 1900s.
This book is based on 40 years of Sarah Eliza VanPelt Summers' transcribed diaries and letters which outline her life from the late nineteenth century to the 1930's. Sadie (as she was know to most) was a woman living in a small town in the Appalachian Mountains of Southwestern Virginia. Brought up by childless relatives, Sadie matures from a teen at Plumer Memorial Female College into a remarkable woman exhibiting both resourcefulness and resilience.
Readers who appreciate tales of strong women, or of Appalachian life, and anyone in the four-state area near Southwestern Virginia will enjoy this story. It questions the typical idea of Appalachian lifestyle in the early twentieth century, and challenges the generally accepted concepts of what women of that time period could accomplish.
Admission is free and all are welcome.
