Blacksburg Wine Lab presents a Burns Night Winemaker Tasting on Thursday, January 25, 2024.

Burns Night is a celebration of the life and work of Scotland’s National Poet, Robert Burns, also known as Rabbie Burns, and it’s held every year on January 25th. It usually involves a ceremonial meal with toasts to the Bard and performances of his poetry.

The first ever Burns Supper was held at Burns Cottage in Alloway on July 1801 to commemorate five years since the death of the Bard and was attended by nine of his close friends.

They shared a meal of Haggis, read his work aloud and made a speech in his honor. The event was so successful, and they enjoyed it so much it was repeated on his birthday, and thus the tradition of Burns Night was born!

We'll be pouring a selection of wines from Dogwood & Thistle owned by Sandy and Erin Robertson. With the dogwood being the state flower of Virginia (where Erin was born and raised), and the thistle being the flower of Scotland (where much of Sandy’s family is from). They split their time between Northern California and Charlottesville, Virginia.

Sandy Robertson will be joining us talking about their winery and wines.
