Virginia Tech presents the annual Nikki Giovanni Celebration of Poetry and Steger Poetry Prize Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, April 10, 2024 inside The Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech.
Join us for a celebration of poetic excellence from 10 student finalists and the great Nikki Giovanni, followed by prize announcements and a joyous reception.
The ceremony promises an enriching evening featuring original poetry read by students and hosted by University Distinguished Professor Emerita Nikki Giovanni, a world-renowned poet and educator. The poetry prize serves as a platform to honor the power and beauty of words and creativity. This year will showcase the work of undergraduate student finalists from a variety of disciplines.
The top three winners receive monetary awards with the first-place recipient winning $1,100. Second and third place are awarded $500 and $300, respectively. An awards presentation will immediately follow the poetry readings with a reception to follow.
When Nikki Giovanni, an internationally acclaimed poet and the University Distinguished Professor of English at Virginia Tech, established the competition in 2005, she named the award for its first benefactor, Charles W. Steger, the university’s president at the time. Fifteen years later, the award was renamed the Giovanni-Steger Poetry Prize.
The event is free and open to the public.
The Moss Arts Center at Virginia Tech is located at 330 Turner Street NW in Blacksburg, VA.
