UPDATE: Due to weather, the 5th Annual JBR Vineyards Paw Paw Festival has been rescheduled for Saturday, October 26th and Sunday, October 27th.
JBR Vineyards & Winery presents their 5th Annual Paw Paw Festival on Saturday, September 28, 2024 and Sunday, September 29, 2024 from 12:00-5:00 daily.
Pawpaws are an integral part of Appalachian history. They are a native North American fruit. Native Americans not only ate the fruit; they made rope out of the bark. The Shawnee had a “paw paw month” on their calendar. George Washington’s favorite dessert was chilled pawpaw, and pawpaws are mentioned in Lewis and Clark’s log. Mary Draper Ingles was sustained by paw paws on her long trek home from captivity.
For various reasons, pawpaws have no commercial value, so people rarely see or hear about them. Few people know about this fruit and how easy it is to grow in their own yards.
Learn how to select, plant, and care for the paw paw. Go way down yonder to the pawpaw patch! Additionally enjoy great bands and sip on local wine. On Saturday, enjoy the music of The Fisher Peak Timber Rattlers and on Sunday, Bobby Parker performs.
Bobby Parker is a folk, soul, pop and blues singer and 6- and 12-string guitarist with a broad spectrum of influences ranging from Lead Belly to Bob Dylan to Cat Stevens, the Dead/Feat/Band catalog, both Elvises (Presley and Costello), Hank Williams, Sr., the Drive-By Truckers and Talking Heads.
He's traveled widely and studied at the feet of many musical masters, at clubs and concerts, on sunny back porch afternoons, moonlit riverbanks, late nights in dorm rooms and living rooms and anywhere a coffee cup or a campfire can be found.
These days he lives in Blacksburg and is a regular on the regional scene, having performed at FloydFest, countless New River Valley venues and beyond, as a solo performer, with the country blues duo Attic Static and funky folk trio Hot Diggity Dog.
