Description:
The Floyd County Historical Society presents the historic lecture titled "Virginia's Lost Appalachian Trail" on Saturday, November 16, 2024 at The Floyd Center for the Arts.
For over two decades, hikers traversed some of the most breathtaking scenery in the southern Appalachian Mountains along Virginia’s Appalachian Trail. However, in 1952, a dramatic change occurred: the Appalachian Trail Conference relocated 300 miles of the trail more than 50 miles westward, marking the largest re-routing in the trail’s storied history.
Mills Kelly, a historian and lifelong AT section hiker, brings this forgotten history to life in his latest book. "Virginia’s Lost Appalachian Trail" not only chronicles the trail’s past but also explores the enduring memories of residents in southwestern Virginia counties once touched by the original route. Explore the forgotten paths of Virginia's Appalachian Trail. In 1952, the trail was dramatically rerouted 300 miles west, altering its storied history.
Mills Kelly is a distinguished Professor of History at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia. He also hosts The Green Tunnel Podcast, sharing his passion for Appalachian history and culture.
This event is free and open to the public, promising an engaging experience for history enthusiasts, hikers, and curious minds alike.
