Description:
Glencoe Mansion, Museum & Gallery presents "Building A New Life: Exhibit Opening and Panel Discussion" on Wednesday, February 5, 2025.

Schedule of Events:
• 4:00-5:45 PM: Exhibit Opening
• 6:00-7:00 PM: Panel Discussion (Radford City Council Chambers)

Glencoe Mansion, Museum & Gallery will be opening a new exhibit, “Building a New Life” starting at 4:00 PM. The opening of the exhibit will be followed by a panel discussion titled “The African-American Experience After Emancipation” starting at 6:00 PM.

The new exhibit will explore the Reconstruction Era, the pivotal era after the American Civil War, both as a political movement and as a lived experience, with special emphasis on the African-American perspective, especially as it relates to Southwest Virginia. The new exhibit will be on permanent display, but for Black History Month it will be on special display in the Gallery located on Level One.

The opening will be followed with the Panel Discussion at the Radford City Council Chambers, conveniently located adjacent to the museum site. The panel will be comprised of three experts in the field: Hilary Green, PhD; Michael “Mickey” Hickman, PhD; and Dan Thorp, PhD.

Hilary Green, who is participating through the support of Virginia Tech’s Virginia Center for Civil War Studies, is a James B. Duke Professor of Africana Studies at Davidson College, who is releasing her new book Unforgettable Sacrifice: How Black Communities Remembered the Civil War.

Michael “Mickey” Hickman is President of the Calfee Community & Cultural Center Board of Directors located in Pulaski, Virginia and he is also the chair of its museum and history committee. He retired after 42 years with Pulaski County Public Schools where he worked as a principal, high school history teacher and coach.

Dan Thorp is an associate professor of history at Virginia Tech. He is the author of four books and nearly two dozen articles on a range of topics in 18th and 19th-century American history. His most recent works have focused on the history of African Americans in Montgomery County during and after the era of slavery.

The Opening and Panel Discussion are open to the public and free to attend.

Glencoe Mansion, Museum & Gallery is located at 600 Unruh Drive in Radford, VA.
