The Wilderness Road Regional Museum presents their Annual Newbern Founders Day Feast on Sunday, March 2, 2025.
This Swiss inspired meal celebrates the early settlers and founders of Newbern. On March 3, 1810 the General Assembly of Virginia authorized the founding of the village along the Great Road. Families such as the Hances, Honakers, Crouches, Plinkenslavers, Sarvers, Sowers, and many others settled in and around the village named for Bern, Switzerland.
Each year a Swiss inspired menu is crafted by a local Chef and the dinner is served in the old German bank barn on site at the museum. American Culinary Federation Chef Joshua Waskey will prepare a tasty history lesson featuring Zopf Braided Bread, Alpine Cheeses from Meadow Creek Dairy, Heritage Pork Zurcher Geshnetzeltes over Tagliatelle pasta and a side of Rosti. For dessert a Bunder Nusstorte with Homestead Creamery Ice Cream. The menu is a fusion of Swiss recipes with local Appalachian ingredients from regional dairies, mills, farms, and wineries.
Throughout the dinner, history of local Swiss immigrants and their roles settling the mountains of Southwest Virginia will be shared.
