Description:
Historic Smithfield hosts Victoria and Dean Ferguson presenting "Yesah Indigenous Life and Archaeological Perspectives" on Tuesday, January 20, 2026 in The Cellar at Historic Smithfield.
Victoria and Dean Ferguson will generously share their expertise with us during an in-person afternoon program. Victoria Ferguson will begin with a talk on Indians in Virginia’s Interior, focusing on Indigenous history in the region and the lived experiences of Yesáh (Eastern Siouan) populations through the early colonial period. Dean Ferguson will follow with a discussion on how archaeology is used to better understand and interpret this history.
Victoria Ferguson is an enrolled member of the Monacan Indian Nation of Virginia and brings decades of research experience combining archaeology, historical documentation, and community knowledge. Her work has been presented at institutions across Virginia and beyond, and she has led lectures on topics ranging from Indigenous matriarchy and craftsmanship to environmental justice and enslaved communities of color.
This will be a rich opportunity to learn directly from a leading voice in the field.
Historic Smithfield is located at 1000 Merry Oak Way in Blacksburg, VA and The Cellar is accessible through the gift shop.
