Community Cello Works presents the concert titled "Out of Italy: Baroque Music of the Cello Diaspora" on Friday, April 17, 2026 at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Blacksburg, VA.

Enjoy the family friendly one-hour concert!

"Out of Italy" takes audiences and performers on a journey of the cello diaspora, tracing some of the first solo music written for the violoncello when it appeared Italy, the subject of experimental composition when its potential as a solo instrument became apparent. The music for this concert begins in Italy, the birthplace of the cello with works written prior to the famous Bach Suites for Solo Cello, and spans the lifetimes of composer Antonio Bononcini (b. 1677 in Modena), through Martin Berteau (d. 1771 in France).

You will hear a delightful bouquet of some of the first works written outside of Italy (in Spain, Scotland, Austria, France), part of a bountiful explosion of repertoire for the new and promising instrument. This was a time of great exploration both musically and geographically as cellists and composers for the cello took the cello to new frontiers.

"Out of Italy" is presented by solo cellist Lisa Liske with an inimitable continuo team featuring cellist Barbara Krumdieck, harpsichordist Jennifer Streeter, and Baroque guitarist/vocalist Salomé Sandoval (SaSa), a flexible ensemble from the North Carolina Baroque community and North Carolina Baroque Orchestra.
