Description:
Wilderness Road Regional Museum presents a Meet the Author Event & Talk with author Linda Mason and her new book "Your Dear Husband Until Death" on Saturday, May 9, 2026 inside the Do-Better Cottage.
Join us to hear from author Linda Mason on her new book "Your Dear Husband Until Death" on the anniversary date of the Battle of Cloyd's Mountain that recounts the story of Infantryman Thomas Mason of the 14th West Virginia through his wartime letters.
On May 8th, 1864 a large Federal Army was amassed on the north side of Cloyd's Mountain in Pulaski, VA. The next day a terrible battle would take place on the south side of that mountain and on Cloyd's Farm. Among the invading troops were members of the 14th West Virginia Infantry. Like most of the common soldiers on both sides they longed for home and family but were caught up in a devasting war in which they felt it was their responsibility to take part in when their communities called for service.
Book Description:
"Deep within the hills of the future state of West Virginia in Ritchie County arises the real-life story of one young couple's desperate journey through the American Civil War. Based on surviving Mason Family letters written 1862 to 1864 and passed down five generations, relive the dangerous military campaigns waged by Volunteer Fourteenth Infantryman Company F Private Thomas Mason. In his own words, follow Thomas' desperate two-year quest in securing farm help for his childless wife Pleasy, voting on his West Virginia State's founding, enduring the monotonous Camp life in the Eastern Panhandle, dealing with his wife's loneliness, and keeping his farm afloat from a distance.
Join the spiritual journey thrust upon one young couple as they find themselves trapped in the ugly web of War. Take the ride of your life and sense the true sacrifice so many before us made, both men and women, willingly enduring horrendous hardships to see that this Great Nation of ours, The United States of America, survived."
Books will be available for purchase and signing by the author.
The book talk starts at 6:00 PM at the Do-Better Cottage, next door to the main museum.
