The Radford University College of Visual & Performing Arts continues their Selu Scenery Plein Air Workshop series with lead artist Matt Gentry on Saturday, June 6, 2026 from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM with a registration deadline of Wednesday, June 3, 2026 at Selu Conservancy in Radford, VA.

The National Trails Day edition of Selu Scenery will be led by local sketch and watercolor artist Matt "Sharpie" Gentry. Matt will focus on making art while traveling with a special emphasis on packing light and finding ways to fit creating artwork into a busy trip itinerary. Matt will share some of his travel journaling pages and the supplies he used to produce them followed by a walk on the Selu Conservancy where participants are invited to sketch or paint along.

Pack light-sketch book, sketching pencils, simply watercolor options that you can carry easily. you can find small sketchbooks, pencils and other travel, pack light supplies at New River Art and Fiber in Blacksburg, VA.

Matt "Sharpie" Gentry is a Blacksburg native and retired photojournalist with the Roanoke Times. In 2015 he completed a three decades long section hike of the Appalachian Trail during which he earned the trail name “Sharpie” due to his sketching and journaling along the trail in a 6x9 inch sketchbook with removable pages.

Enjoy artist sessions, outdoors at Radford University's Selu Conservancy, an impressive retreat that offers 380 acres of natural beauty and charm.

The Selu Conservancy is located at 3215 Dry Valley Road in Radford, VA.
