Description:
Science on Tap New River Valley presents their August event titled "Mosquitoes eat nectar? How flowers fuel Mosquitoes" on Thursday, August 27, 2026 at Rising Silo Farm Brewery.

Mosquitoes are best known for biting animals and spreading disease, but that isn't all they do. Join us to learn from James Moloney, a PhD student in Virginia Tech's Department of Biochemistry, about mosquitoes' lesser-known source of energy: plants! He'll explain how mosquitoes use nectar from flowers in your garden to get the energy they need to bite. Think you know a lot about mosquitoes? Test your knowledge afterwards in a round of trivia!

Science on Tap is free and open to the public and is hosted by the Center for Communicating Science at Virginia Tech and Virginia Tech's chapter of Sigma Xi.

Science on Tap - New River Valley is a monthly event with science-inspired speakers, performers, and discussions. We support bringing science to our community and our community’s support to local research.

We kick off the event with games, comedy, or other fun things. Then, an invited guest researcher demos their research. And then we'll discuss, ask questions, learn together and mingle.
