Description:
The Floyd County Historical Society presents the historical talk "A History of the Extension Homemakers Council" on Saturday, August 22, 2026 inside the Fallon Community Room upstairs at The Floyd Center for the Arts.
The Floyd County Historical Society is excited to welcome Alexis Vest to speak about the history of the Extension Homemakers' Council. She will speak about the contextual history of the Extension, the goals of the local Council, and the social impact on the community and its members.
In Floyd County, a historically rural and agricultural community, the Extension Homemakers’ Council was vital. It has been a part of the Floyd County community since 1941. At its creation, the Council provided education on canning safety, home economics, textile production, financial literacy, and community health. Floyd’s chapter was part of a national network of local “councils” that grew out of the U.S. government’s land-grant university system. The local council functioned not just as a club, but as a lifeline of local crowd-sourced education before the internet.
Today’s Virginia Cooperative Extension remains the direct local descendant of that 1941 network. The Floyd County Office shares the physical location with Floyd County 4-H, which is standard for the land-grant university extension model, as youth development and family/consumer sciences operate under the same organizational roof. The organization that quietly built Floyd’s community network is still operating today.
Admission is free and all are welcome.
The Floyd Center for the Arts is located at 220 Parkway Lane South, Suite 1 in Floyd, VA.
