Description:
Virginia Tech Perspective Gallery (located inside the Squires Student Center) presents an Art Reception for "Compendium: Art from Nature Across the Ages" on Friday, September 4, 2026.
"Compendium" is an exhibition exploring the use of plants as subject matter in art from the mid-19th century to the present day. The exhibition includes 19th-century Japanese woodblock prints originally used in botanical guides, as well as the work of Karl Blossfeldt (1865–1932), a German artist who employed photogravure techniques in the early 20th century to create highly detailed images of plants.
The late 20th century to the present is represented through silkscreens by Virginia Tech alumnus Robert Miller; photographs by his daughter, Pippi Miller, which capture unforgettable trees; and sculptural masks by Zach Blevin’s Goad, which draw on botanical forms to personify nature.
Also included is a glimpse into Virginia’s woodland plants and their medicinal uses, highlighting their beauty, form, and function.
The exhibit and reception is free and open to all.
Refreshments will be provided.
The exhibit will be on display from August 25 - December 16, 2026.
The Virginia Tech Perspective Gallery, located within the Squires Student Center, is located at 290 College Avenue, Suite 225 in Blacksburg, VA on the campus of Virginia Tech.
