The Lyric Theatre presents An Evening of Tolkien and The Middle Ages with a Free Screening of "The Fellowship of the Ring" and Lecture on Wednesday, February 12, 2025.
At 6:00 PM, please join Virginia Tech professor Matthew Gabriel as he discusses the life and career of JRR Tolkien with a talk entitled “The Medievalist and Mordor: How Tolkien's Career Helped Forge the Lord of the Rings.” Prof. Hopkins will show how Tolkien’s life and career, his scholarly expertise on the European Middle Ages, as well as his experiences in Europe during a time of crisis during the early 20th century, shaped the world of Middle Earth. Then, after the talk, please stay for a free screening of the film: "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring".
The talk will last about 30 minutes followed by a Q&A session.
The Fellowship of the Ring is a 2001 action adventure film rated PG-13 starring Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen and Orlando Bloom and directed by Peter Jackson.
Movie Synopsis: A meek Hobbit from the Shire and eight companions set out on a journey to destroy the powerful One Ring and save Middle-earth from the Dark Lord Sauron.

Note: UVA Professor Stephen Hopkins was originally scheduled to provide the lecture however due the inclement weather he was not able to make the trip.
