Claytor Lake State Park presents the 2026 Virginia State Parks History & Culture Day on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
Learn about the fascinating history of our park, our lake, and the surrounding area.
On June 15, 1936, Virginia became the first state to open an entire park system of six parks on the same day. To celebrate this significant anniversary, Virginia State Parks hosts History and Culture Day every year on June 15, providing a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the stories that make our parks special while enjoying the scenic beauty of its natural landscapes. From living history demonstrations to ranger-led kayaking tours and guided nature walks, History and Culture Day offers special programs for visitors of all ages.
Event Schedule:
• 2:00 PM - Roaming Ranger located throughout the park:
Be on the lookout for the roaming ranger with an interesting mini-program.
• 4:00 PM - Howe House History Tour at the Howe House Front Porch
Join our rangers for a short walk around the historic Howe House and learn about the history of our park and how it came to be.
There will also be self-guided opportunities.
The event is free, but the $7.00 state park parking fee per vehicle still applies.
